"The job of an educator is to teach students to see the vitality in themselves." - Joseph Campbell

Mrs.HazzardCarol Hazzard is the founder of Hancock Street Preschool, and also the beloved teacher of the Red Class. She has been teaching for 30 years; 25 of them preschool. She has also taught first grade, working with high risk and culturally diverse students; tutored individual children; and consulted other educators. She is an advocate for children outside the classroom as well, volunteering her services for various programs. Carol's inspiration to found Hancock Street Preschool was a result of her involvement in her own children's co-op, where she served on the board of directors for most of the six years her three daughters were in school. She has continued to teach at Hancock because she loves the shared joy of nurturing and guiding the children - and their parents - within the preschool community.

Mrs.HodgeSandy Hodge teaches the Blue Class. She is a credentialed teacher who has worked for 20 years in early childhood education. Her classroom experience includes preschool, kindergarten and first grade. She has worked in a variety of settings including a Head Start classroom, a program for children with special needs, and classrooms in both private and public schools. Sandy's appreciation for the value of co-ops began as a parent when her two daughters attended a local co-op preschool. She loves the sense of community that is fostered for both children and adults in the co-op setting, and she feels fortunate to spend her days with children who allow her to be a part of their natural enthusiasm for wondering, exploring, and creating.

Teacher update

Carol Hazzard, founder of Hancock Street Preschool and teacher of the Red class (HSP class for three year olds), will be retiring as of June 2012. Carol formed HSP in 1984 and has been the first preschool teacher for hundreds of Portland children and their families. Her wisdom, warmth, creativity, and dedication to early childhood education has had a profound influence on the lives of many.

Sandy Hodge, teacher of the Blue class (HSP class for four year olds) will be teaching both the Red and the Blue class starting September 2012. Her cheerful, nurturing teaching style has been an important piece of HSP since 2003. Sandy embraces her role as a curious life-long learner and as a passionate partner of children and parents.

Save the date. There will be a retirement party for Carol Hazzard on Saturday, June 2 at the Irvington Club. Click here for details.
